Analyzing Past Activity to Identify Trends - Creating Graphs
This example shows how to execute a simple search and create trend graphs.
Question
Over the last 10 years (1997 to present), what trends have evolved in the Williston Basin?
Step 1 - Specify the Search Parameters
From the search screen, enter the following criteria into the General Information search box.
To narrow your search to the Williston Basin Bakken ONLY, you must also enter the following extents in the Well Location search box. For information on modifiers see Using Modifiers.
Step 2 - Execute the Search
To perform the search, check the execute box located above the search screen.
When the execution is complete, the number of records found will appear in the Records Found box. (Please note: The number of records found will vary depending on which EDGE release you are using.)
Step 3 - Create Trend Graphs
Select (click on) the  tab.
The trends list view will appear, along with a set of menu items across the top.
Select (click on) the  text box, to display a list of graphing options.
Select RR Year vs Total Wells.
The EDGE will quickly generate a graph showing Rig Release Year versus Total Wells. Note the huge increase in activity for 2005 and 2006. Also note that only first quarter data is available for 2007.
To generate a 2nd graph, select  from Create Graph dropdown menu.
Interestingly, Average Initial Production rates have increased markedly in 2005 and 2006. (Only one IP is available for 2007 so it is not discussed here.) Why is this? If you were to create a Summary Report, explained in Summaries, you would quickly see that horizontal drilling took off in 2005 and that these horizontal wells have achieved higher Average Initial Production Rates. You could represent this visually by adding a horizontal flag to your search and creating new graphs for horizontal wells only. See Search Screen.
