Well and Production Data

For every well event, the following are provided:

  • Well location, status, class and direction (vertical, horizontal, directional)
  • Field strike area
  • Producing zone - clean-up by Canadian Discovery Ltd. geotechnical staff
  • Pool (where applicable)
  • Operator
  • Initial hydrocarbon production - assigned by Canadian Discovery Ltd. geotechnical staff
  • Cumulative hydrocarbon production

The majority of this data comes from government sources via IHS Energy. Producing zones and initial production are cleaned-up/assigned in-house by our geotechnical staff.

Producing Zones

The producing zone is the geological horizon from which the well event is producing. Although this information is available from the regulatory authorities, the system has many flaws which the EDGE data set attempts to overcome.

At Canadian Discovery, all well events are assigned to a single zone.

In the case of multiple completion events, producing zones are assigned individually to each event.

In the case of multi zone (commingled) production the producing zone will be assigned to the deepest producing zone. However, if the dominant producing zone can be identified, the producing zone will be changed to reflect that information. At this time, no attempt is made to prorate commingled production to different zones.

Initial Production

Canadian Discovery calculates initial production using the first three months on stream (2,160 hours), or as close to that number as possible. This system is used in order to compensate for the effects of 'flush' production. If the well has not yet been on stream for sufficient time, a calendar day rate is sometimes used. This measure of productivity is influenced by production penalties, or physical constraints on producing operations.
