How to Use whatmapLive!
The whatmapLive! is designed to help you easily access well information, hydrocarbon shows and test data within a geological context.

The whatmapLive! is optimized for the following browsers: Internet Explorer 7 & 8 and Firefox 3.6.3
While we do our best to ensure the product is compatible with all client systems, we cannot guarantee all functionality on older browsers.

Navigation features include: While some content is publicly accessible, other content and features require client login AND valid user permissions. Restricted content and functions are flagged below with an asterisk (*).


Tabs
Tabs are stacked vertically along the left hand side of the browser window. Tabs may be minimized or expanded (using the up and down arrows) according to user preference.
  • Login - Use your Username and Password to log into the whatmapLive! Once logged in, you will see the products to which you are subscribed. You will need to be logged in to access certain parts of the whatmapLive!

  • *Download Modules - This section includes links to the PetroView® Module and the ArcGIS™ Shapefiles. A subscription to the PetroView® and/or the ArcGIS™ Shapefiles is required to download.

  • About / Support / Master Legend - Provides links to background information, e-mail lists, technical and sales support, etc.

  • *Latest Well Updates (click to zoom) - This tab alerts you to important activity by listing all recent well commentary, sorted by date by default. You may also sort by well name, as well as choosing to display UK wells, Norway wells, or both. If you select (click) on any well, the whatmapLive! will automatically zoom to location. You must be logged in to access this feature.

  • Map Layers - Contains a list of the layers available in the whatmapLive! You can expand and collapse these layers by clicking on the plus (+) and minus (-) signs next to the layer names. This tab also acts as a legend, providing small icons of what is symbolized in the map. To be able to turn the layers on and off, as well as to gain access to additional layers not enabled by default, please log in with your valid Username and Password. The main map sets include:

Dropdown Menus / Display Details
Dropdown Menus and Display Details appear horizontally across the top of the browser window.

  • *Zoom to UWI - Select any well from the drop down list and whatmapLive! will automatically zoom to location. You must be logged in to access this feature.
  • Zoom to Area - Select a preset area from the drop down menu in order to zoom-in automatically. Eight common areas are provided:
    • UKCS - W&E of Shetlands (ties to W&E of Shetlands geological layers)
    • UKCS - Central North Sea (ties to the Central North Sea geological layers)
    • UKCS - Southern North Sea (ties to the Southern North Sea geological layers)
    • UKCS - West of Britain
    • UKCS - Rockall & Hebrides
    • NCS - North Sea
    • NCS - Norwegian Sea
    • NCS - Barents Sea
  • Scale - Displays the scale of the current view and allows you to zoom in or out by selecting the scales in the dropdown. If you use another method to zoom in or out, this dropdown is updated to reflect the scale to which you zoom. The map loads at a scale of 1:16,000,000 and can be zoomed to 1:75,000.
  • Projection - The whatmapLive! is currently viewable in UTM 31 only. A Central Mercator projection option may be introduced in the future, depending upon client interest.
  • Coordinates - Displays the cursor location coordinates in DMS (degrees, minutes, seconds).

Tools and Overview Map
The tool box, which defaults to the top right of the browser window, provides a number of navigation and data acces options. It can be dragged and dropped to any location, and also minimized.
  • Well Textbox *Well Textbox - Select this tool to access the text boxes. The cursor will change to cross-hairs with a text box icon in the lower right. There are multiple fields within the textboxes which include Well (UWI and number of DSTs that may exist in parentheses), Operator, Spud Date, Completion Date, Status, Oil Shows, Gas Shows, Digest Link (links to any UK/Norway Discovery Digest articles), DSTs (if any exist) and Comments. If there are multiple wells in close proximity, or if a well has been sidetracked or recompleted, a dropdown list will appear in the text box to allow you to select between all wells within the vicinity. You must be logged in to access the text boxes.
  • Master Legend (PDF) Master Legend (PDF) - The Master Legend (PDF) button opens a PDF document containing a full legend of the whatmapLive!
    Note: Some browsers may have popups blocked and will block the PDF from opening. In such case, please launch the PDF using the link provided in the
    "About / Support / Master Legend" tab.
  • Zoom In Zoom In - The Zoom In tool is used to zoom into the map. The cursor will change to cross-hairs with a magnifying glass icon in the lower right with a plus (+) sign inside. You can either click once to zoom in one level, or you can click and drag to highlight to zoom into an area. You may also zoom in by clicking the plus (+) button on the scale bar at the top left corner of the map.
  • Zoom Out Zoom Out - The Zoom Out tool is used to zoom out of the map. The cursor will change to cross-hairs with a magnifying glass icon in the lower right with a minus (-) sign inside. You can either click once to zoom out one level, or you can click and drag to highlight to zoom out of an area. You may also zoom out by clicking the minus (-) button on the scale bar at the top left corner of the map.
  • Pan Pan - This tool is selected by default. Select this tool to allow you to pan across the map. The cursor changes to a cross with arrows on the tips. Click and drag your mouse to move (pan) the map to your desired location. You may also pan by selecting any of the four directional arrows at the top left corner of the map.
  • Full Extent Full Extent - Select this tool to zoom to the original extent of the whatmapLive!
  • Back Extent Back Extent - This tool will step back to the last zoom level and/or position (moves back through the history).
  • Forward Extent Forward Extent - Select this tool if you wish to return to the zoom level and/or position before selecting the Back Extent tool (moves forward through the history).
  • Magnifier Magnifier - The Magnifier tool is used to turn the Magnifier palette on and off. You can click and drag this palette over any area you wish to magnify and resize it by clicking and dragging on the bottom or right edges of the palette. The palette will turn transparent as it is being positioned to allow you to better select the magnification area and has a dropdown for the level of magnification (2x to 10x).
  • Measure Measure - Select this tool to find the coordinates of a point, the distance of a line, and the perimeter and area of a polygon. The cursor will turn into cross-hairs when this tool is selected. The Measure palette has three options; Point - Coordinates, Line - Distance, and Polygon - Area. The Point option will allow you to get the X and Y coordinates of any point you select on the map. The Line option will allow you to measure the distance between two or more points and allows you to select the unit of measure. The Polygon option will allow you to measure the perimeter and area of any polygon you draw on the map also allowing you to select the units of measure.
  • Overview Map Overview Map - The overview map tool is used to turn the Overview Map palette on and off. The Overview Map - like the tool box - can be dragged, dropped and minimized, and provides a visual indication of the curent map zoom and location. Panning and zooming can also be done from within the overview map by clicking and dragging within the red bounding box to pan and clicking and resizing the bottom right corner of the red bounding box to zoom.
  • Print Print - This tool allows you to print a map of your current working area with the options to include a map title and select the map size. The printable map will open in a new browser window with the title at the top and a legend at the bottom. Selecting the print option from your browser's menu bar will allow you to print this map to a printer.
